Only after the industrial revolution, and the invention of the hot air kilned drum roasters, were maltsters able to dry malts at a lower temperature to produce lighter colour malts that form the basis of lagers we know of today.We have our own drum roasters at Gateway and we have used a small percentage of highly roasted malt to re-create this dark lager in a unique ‘sparge only’ process. Due to this, the beer is almost black but has a restrained roasty & coffee like character blended with the right amount of caramel & toffee notes balanced with a moderate amount of hop bitterness and a slightly spicy hop character.It’s crisp & refreshing in a unique way. As they say in the Czech Republic, “Na Zdravi – to your health!”
