The SS Wanaka was a beast of a steamer - weighing in at 277 tonnes without its cargo. It was helmed by the renowned Capt. James Meads and had regularly been employed in the trade between Onehunga and New Plymouth. In a twist of foolish irony, the Wanaka was to meet its demise on a hazy morning - April 1, 1891.Due to a low lying fog, along with smoke from nearby bushfires, visibility at times was reduced to only a boat length in front. After a few miscalculations in location, the ship began to turn toward the port.Unfortunately, the ship turned too soon and ran aground the Puketapu reef, north of Waitara. The boat’s crew and cargo were all rescued successfully but the ship’s wreckage remains there today.
