India Brown AleBy now every even half-knowledgeable beer buff has most likely heard the grand old story about how the beer style known as India Pale Ale - or simply IPA - came to life. As a hoppier and more sturdy beer that was better suited to survive the long and strenuous sea voyage from the breweries in the United Kingdom and all the way to the British colonial troops in India. Most British troops were relieved to be able to drink non-rotten beer again, but in the Northern Indian province of Himachal Pradesh General William Lovelace Walton of The Royal Northumberland Fusiliers was far from happy. Hailing out of Newcastle, the regiment's soldiers were used to drinking Brown Ale - brown and not pale. The General could see his Geordie soldiers spewing out the Pale Ale whenever they gave it a try, and as a responsible commanding officer, he knew that something had to be done. Luckily a solution was to be found close-by. You see, The Fusiliers were stationed in Palampur, also known as the tea capital of India. And as the General was also a keen tea drinker, he started a secret experiment in his private quarters. He found that adding the good, local, black tea with a stint of bergamot oil to the barrels of India Pale Ale would add both extra bitterness and - most importantly - the brown color that his soldiers desired so much. The pride of Palampur - namely its tea - made all the difference to the soldiers, making The Fusiliers the happiest regiment in Her Majesty's kingdom.
