That Carsten Berthelsen was to have a life in beer was somehow written in the stars, since he was born only a stone’s throw from a Copenhagen brewery. However, since that brewery was Danish Pale Lager giant Carlsberg, somebody in charge of the star alignment that day must’ve screwed up big time, since Carsten’s life in beer would very much be centered around the gentle beasts of noble Belgian brewing ancestry, rather than mainstream Pale Lagers. Carsten’s beer awakening came on an Odyssey-like train journey while still a young man. A journey that took him from the Czech Pilsner country, through Bavarian Bock lands till finally finding the Holy Grail in the shape of a Rochefort Abbey Ale in Antwerpen, Belgium. All of this many, many years before the worldwide craft beer boom. These days anybody even remotely associated with beer in Denmark will be familiar with Carsten’s almost always smiling face and with his notorious lip lick, hinting at a more devilish personality behind his gentleman-like appearance. Carsten is a writer of several books, a TV host, a beer judge, a beer guide. He is knighted for his tireless promotion of Belgian quality beer by both the Kingdom of Belgium and by the Belgian Brewers' Association. In his Danish homeland he has managed the difficult task of promoting good beer in general whether brewed by one of the giants or by a tiny craft brewer. Carsten has so much respect for beer in general and for the hardworking women and men behind it.
