In Chinese Buddhism, Longnü (龙女) is described as being the eight-year-old daughter of the Dragon King of the East Sea and appears for the first time in the 12th Chapter of the Lotus Sutra. She is a disciple of GuanYin, the Chinese name for the Mahāyāna bodhisattva Avalokitasvara. As the story goes, when Shariputra voices his disbelief in this female child of eight could reach enlightenment (“a woman's body is soiled and defiled!”), Longnü transforms into a bodhisattva and attains enlightenment on the spot. Pretty rad, right? In honor of the Longnü, we present the Sea King’s Daughter Russian Imperial Stout.
