Halloween is largely based on the Celtic fall festival, Samhain. October 31st signified the thinnest veil between the worlds of the living and the dead and the boundary could easily be crossed. Souls would return on this night of the year bringing either blessings or revenge. It was common in Ireland to hollow out turnips and carve in grotesque faces to ward off souls with evil intent.
