A winterbeer? Why not?I'm not used to brew seasonal beers. I'd rather not classify any beer within a season. Any beer should be drunk when you feel like it. But I have to admit that a warm summerday calls for a lower abv, refreshing one, spring maybe for a saison, autumn might just settle with a bockbeer.So why not clarify this beer as my first go on a seasonal one?The obvious questionthat comes to mind is: "What makes a winterbeer a winterbeer?" So I did what most brewers would probably do. Pick the back of your brain, check and verify the world wide web and call some brewfriends and discuss.Eventually I came up with following aspects, allthough winterbeer is not concidered an actual beerstyle.-high ABV-brown or black color-low IBU-often spiced (most often with star anise and licorice)Because I don't entirely like to do the expected, I chose a low abv brown ale. And instead of spicing it up with the usual, I decided to go with a Holland cookie spices mix. This might bring back the memories of what you would eat and smell in a cold december month while you were young.But in the end it will be the low abv and medium body that makes this beer easier drinkable than most winterwarmers.Have a go and see for yourself what comes to mind while savouring this new member of the homo beerectus family.
