Dark, delightfully bitter and more than a little confusing. This is how some describe brewer Kenny, and it’s not too far off the mark when it comes to describing his latest single-keg brew, Jack the DRIPA.A Dark Rye India Pale Ale, Jack the DRIPA is hazy and mysterious, a chocolatey hop bomb, and with hops looming in every sip (literally and figuratively), this is an exercise in balance. Hoppy as all get out? Check. Opulent, chocolatey, roasty malts? Check. Jack the DRIPA has a rich mouthfeel and a full palate with a spicy finish, and the hops lurk at the back, initially expressing fruit, then bitterness.Not for the faint of heart, this beer invites an inquisitive mind. Coffee, cocoa and spice suggest this may be a nice rich winter brew to enjoy on a foggy night in Whitechapel. But the fresh fruit and bitter qualities of the hops lend themselves marvellously to a summertime tipple here on North Street. Everybody has a different theory, but one thing is certain. It’s out there.
