Like all beer styles, the porter has constantly evolved over time. It emerged in the 1700s as a highly hopped, aged example of generic “brown beer” that was aged in oak vats. Into the 1800s porter became the most popular beer style in the world, brewed by the first industrial scale breweries powered by urbanization and the industrial revolution. During that time, malt was roasty and slightly smoky as it dried over fire. The beer was aged in giant oak vats with a unique type of yeast identified by the Carlsberg Lab as Brettanomyces or “British yeast”, that dried the beer out and matured it.Old London Porter is brewed according to these traditional methods, representing a taste of history! This is a historical Brett Porter!
