We have been brewing some dark ales for the colder months but it would be scandalous for a dark lager not to get a run out. Very much a beer that we want to drink in the brewery, this Munich Style Dunkel has gotten us all a bit excited. Pouring a deep copper to brown colour, don't be fooled into thinking this is a roasty beer. This is brewed with lots of dark Munich malt for a super bready character. Add in some melanoidin malt to turbo charge this to a slightly more toasted bread crust and then a pinch of smooth Carafa Special II (debittered chocolate malt) to give colour and the ever so slight note of chocolate. This is the definition of liquid bread. Deeply malty but not sweet as it finishes with a relatively dry finish to maintain drinkability. Hop chracter and bitterness take a back seat but are present just for balance. This is a beer style that is crimenally under-brewed outside of Germany and we hope this helps people rediscover this approachable, drinkable and extremely satisfying dark lager.
