During the early Roman Republic a political struggle raged between the patricians (aristocracy) and plebeians (commoners). Despite their vast majority in population, the military, and in the production of food and resources, plebeians were prohibited from holding public office. Through a series of secessions (mass walk-outs), strikes, and protests, the working class gradually forced significant social and political reforms.
