The concept of lemons representing substandard items with significant defects or malfunctions traces back to early 20th century Britain. “To hand someone one a lemon” meant to pass off an inferior item as good. In America, by the ‘60’s, the term evolved to be more closely associated with the automobile and issues affecting its safety, value, or utility.
