Back in the Middle Ages, brewers in Berlin dreamed up one of the most refreshing beer styles known to man: the Berliner Weisse. Light-bodied, bone-dry, highly carbonated, and slightly tart, this beer impressed all who tried it; Napoleon Bonaparte himself enjoyed the Berliner specialty so much he dubbed it “The Champagne of the North.”Kleine Weisse is a traditional example of the style—you won’t find fruit additions here—but an addition of German Mandarina Bavaria hops does invite Clementine orange notes to dance with the beer’s lemonade-like tartness.
