In the mid-2010s, as New England IPAs began to gain popularity, beer enthusiasts flocked to define this style that was so different from traditional IPAs. The terms that came to represent New England IPAs were 'hazy,' 'juicy,' and 'dry/drinkable.'Today, the focus of New England IPAs is often on the impact of each sip, making the term 'dry/drinkable' seem odd. However, back then, when only IPAs with over 100 IBUs were considered true IPAs, the juicy and balanced New England IPAs were indeed more drinkable. At that time, my favorite style among the various New England IPAs was none other than Pale Ale. It retained the beautiful aspects of an IPA while being so easy to drink and clean that I could enjoy several glasses. Our second beer from Pile of Days, 'The Extinction,' is born out of my love for Pale Ale from that era. It’s a New England Pale Ale that focuses on the charm of Pale Ale, with a slight twist to match today’s New England IPA trends.Generously hopped with Citra, with a touch of Nelson Sauvin and Riwaka, giving it rich aromas of citrus, tropical fruits, and white grapes. It's much sweeter and fuller than classic NEPAs, but it remains clean and smooth, maintaining the high drinkability of Pale Ale.
