Ann Evans née Clive, a nurse through the Crimean War, moved from England to New Zealand in 1862 as part of a throng of emigrants with big ideas - Ann’s being the establishment of a hospital in the small colony.After her business plan was thwarted by rising building costs, inflation and a global GIB® shortage, she landed in Hāwera where she tended injured settlers and soldiers. Her most famous patient came when she agreed to be led blindfolded to a secret hiding spot near the Waingongoro river where she nursed an ailing enemy of the crown during the Taranaki feuds of the late 1800s.As a nod to the good nurse, this old English beer is inspired by the ales from Ann’s home near the Trent River in Burton.
